Edible Gardens Campaign

The Edible Home Garden Campaign will work in the Sacramento region to complete at least 350 edible garden box builds by February 2013 in partnership with community organizations, individuals, youth organizations and businesses, affordable housing developers and other key partners. Our goal is to promote a more healthy and sustainable community through promoting healthy eating and living.

Mission

To encourage, support and build at least 350 edible home garden installations by 2013 in the Sacramento Area.

(At least 150 of the builds will be targeted for low-moderate income families and included additional educational and technical assistance services.)

Goals

  • Increase community engagement.
  • Increase youth engagement and employment opportunities.
  • Increase healthy food consumption in region.
  • Provide low-income residents with healthy food access options and education.
  • Reduce the regions garden footprint.
  • Support locally and organic supplied foods.

Building Healthy Communities Healthy Food For All Project

Supported by the California Endowment and Soil Born Farms, Ubuntu Green is completing 60 home garden box installations between October 2010 and September 2012 in the Sacramento Building Healthy Communities project area. The project will provide support for the maintenance of 60 home and community gardens throughout the 12 South Sacramento neighborhoods and provide education to households about health aspects of locally grown foods. This project will be executed in partnership with the Ubuntu Green, Green Youth Leadership Team, the Sacramento Yard Farmer and the Sacramento League of Urban Gardeners.

Organizations and individuals in the region are encouraged to join the campaign and report their garden build locations. We also welcome partnerships with community partners to provide educational and technical assistance materials and to do joint community builds.
