Home and Community Gardens Project
Ubuntu Green’s Home and Community Garden Project is designed to build up to 60 home gardens in the Sacramento Building Healthy Communities (SBHC) target area over the next two years. The project is sponsored by the CA Endowment and part of Soil Born Farms, Health Food for All Project and done in collaboration with the Sacramento Yard Farmer, Soil Born Farms, and the Asian Resources Inc. Beginning February 26th, we started building raised bed gardens for SBHC residents with a primary focus on low and working class families. The gardens are made of renewable and recycled materials, local or organically sourced seeds, soil and starters, drip irrigation systems and timers. Each raised bed will be customized to meet the needs of each household. In addition, participants will receive quarterly information on healthy food access in the community and region, culturally diverse recipes and provide us information on where they source food.
We are reaching out to you, partners of SBHC and Ubuntu Green, to assist with outreach to targeted community members willing to participate in the project. They will need to be willing to participate in the project through September 2012 and take short quarterly surveys and receive the healthy food access, gardening and related materials. All materials will be distributed in English, Hmong, Spanish and Vietnamese. Other languages can be provided upon request. Wherever possible we would like to work with families that are already receiving or have received services from green and sustainable organizations in the area. We also will be attempting to do builds in small neighborhood clusters to create a stronger sense of community in small areas.
Finally, there will be volunteer opportunities for anyone interested in participating and giving back to the community. We have already attracted attention from service projects outside of SBHC interested in working with builds.
