Ubuntu Green – Green Community Program

UG supports and develops green community activities through community and home gardens, youth development, green events, education, and outreach. Our work is achieved through community-based collaborations and empowerment.

Community Outreach and Participation – Outreach to community members on green principles and lifestyles.

  • Green Oak Park! – This annual event aims to educate community members about how to live green and healthy lifestyles. The event features interactive activities designed to educate the community on local and organic food options, healthy living, bike and pedestrian activity, energy efficiency, and green jobs. It also serves as a way for the community to interact and have fun through music, art and healthy eating.

  • 2nd Avenue Beautification and Cleanup Project – Ubuntu Green is currently partnering with local residents, the Oak Park Business Association, North Franklin Business District, Sierra Curtis Neighborhood Association, local businesses and others to clean up and beautify the 2nd Avenue Underpass between the Oak Park and Curtis Park neighborhoods.

The goal is to make the area safe and enjoyable for all residents and visitors through regular maintenance and clean-up, improved lighting and security, community gardens and improved bike and pedestrian infrastructure. It will also encourage walking, biking and partnerships and visits between the two communities and to local businesses connected to the underpass.

  • Green Youth Leadership Team – The Ubuntu Green, Green Youth Leadership Team (GYLT) will train youth on how to live green and healthy lifestyles and to educate their community to do the same. Students will participate in regular community outreach activities that will be designed by the student teams with guidance from Ubuntu Green. Students will also participate in regular interactive training to assist in planning outreach activities and developing educational and job skills. Youth will leverage their knowledge to participate in local activities that will enhance their community, achieve greater access to healthy food, and improve public health.  GYLT will partner with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and its Hands on Trees program.

Community Garden and Education Project – In 2009, Ubuntu Green launched its Community Garden Program to promote the development and sustainability of community gardens. The program is designed to promote micro-business practices in partnership with residents and youth to promote healthy lifestyles and sustainability. In addition, we will:

  • Community Garden Research – Ubuntu Green is currently completing research that is looking nationwide at best practices in community gardens in low-income communities and communities of color. This research will be turned into a toolkit to be used for starting urban community gardens.
  • Community and home gardens – Ubuntu Green is leading efforts through strategic partnerships to develop a community-wide system of private home and community gardens. This will include connections to local farm stands and educational outreach to communities and youth. In addition, residents and youth will learn micro-business and leadership skills. Ubuntu Green will partner with Alchemist CDC, Sacramento Yard Farmer and other community partners to create community-wide systemic change.
