We’re proud to join with a diverse coalition of advocacy groups to petition for greater investment in pedestrian and bicycle access as part of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments’ (SACOG) Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) for 2035. SACOG is currently holding workshops to hear from stakeholders on their priorities for crafting the
blueprint that will help guide transportation planning decisions for the next two decades.
The coalition is asking for a modest share of overall transportation funding for the six-county Sacramento region. A $5 billion investment in bicycle and pedestrian retrofit projects represents only 14 percent of total transportation funding. This investment will result in safe routes to school that are both walkable and bikeable, safer and reliable access to public transit, improved freeway and river crossings and complete streets that are safe and accessible to all. In addition, it is estimated that these critical projects can be completed within 12 years.
According to Ubuntu Green President and CEO Charles Mason, “We need an all-inclusive transportation vision for the Sacramento region. That means not just more road building, but making if safer and more convenient for residents to bike and walk to their destinations. As a result we are taking more cars off the road and improving health at the same time.”
Among the other groups in the coalition with Ubuntu Green are: WALKSacramento, Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, Breathe California of Sacramento Emigrant Trails, Sacramento Walking Sticks, Coalition on Regional Equity (CORE), Environmental Council of Sacramento, Safe Kids Greater Sacramento and Gray Panthers of Sacramento.
