Sacramento Environmental Commission honors Ubuntu Green

Charles Mason accepts award on behalf of Ubuntu Green

On Monday, April 18, Ubuntu Green will be honored by the Sacramento Environmental Commission for its work on its home gardens project. The Commission reviewed dozens of submissions for the award and selected Ubuntu Green as a standout. “This is an outstanding honor to be recognized by the Commission for our work in the community,” said Ubuntu Green’s President and CEO Charles L. Mason, Jr. “We share this award with all of the members of our community who are taking the initiative to lead healthier lives by growing their own high-quality foods at their homes. And this is just the beginning.”

Indeed it is the beginning. Ubuntu Green’s home garden project launched in February, with the goal of building 60 edible gardens in South Sacramento over the next two years. Ten have been built thus far, with more requests coming in from interested residents every day. The home gardens project is being undertaken with financial support from The California Endowment and the expertise of Soil Born Farms and Sacramento Yard Farmer. The award will be presented at the Commission’s meeting on April 18 at 6:30 pm at 700 H Street in Sacramento.
